WE KNOW BRAKES

Our Storm Brakes

Johnson designs and manufactures a range of railway and rail mounted equipment products which ensure safety in the event of high winds or storms. Often referred to as Storm Brakes, the rail clamp models include rail head clamping and push down at the top of the rail.  We also offer rail brakes which grip the actual wheels of the crane.  Control systems for the Storm Brakes are offered in either hydraulic or electric versions.

Johnson rail clamps are offered in a variety of mounting arrangements including, Sill Beam, Truck End, and Flange mount.  It is typical to have a rail clamp or rail brake control system on each side of the crane to prevent long hydraulic hose distances.

Rail Brakes (Push Down type):

A similar style of Storm Brake, Rail Brakes incorporate a hardened tool steel shoe, which is applied directly to the top of a rail head by spring force. Rail brakes are sill-mounted with shims and plated emergency release bolts. The spring stack can be varied to deliver the required holding force. Lubrication points are provided at the head/shoe mating surfaces. Features and options include a release indicating/interlock limit switch, special alloys, coatings and custom mountings.

Wheel Clamps

Johnson Wheel Clamps and Wheel Brakes act directly on the wheel side flanges of rail mounted equipment. They can be fail safe, spring applied, or pressure applied. Wheel clamps are intended for emergency stopping and holding, and have hardened serrated shoes. Wheel brakes are similar to caliper brakes and are used for dynamic stopping and holding. A toggle linkage compensates for lining wear to provide constant braking force.
